The 2009 World Series of Poker is special in a number of ways. It is the 40th anniversary of the series, it hosted two new events including a $40k anniversary special, and recently it hosted its largest ever field of over 50 poker players in the annual WSOP Senior Event. With 2,707 players signing up to play in the $1k event, the winner was one of the younger players, 58 year old Michael T. Davis, one of the only pros in the field. His win of $437,358 is a record breaker for any senior event.

The mixed tournament at the World Series of Poker provides the widest variety of poker games in one tournament that players will find. While H.O.R.S.E. is usually the most popular, many players have expanded their repertoire to include even more than those five games, and the mixed event is the place for them to play limit hold’em, Omaha-8, seven-card razz, seven-card stud, seven-card stud-8, no-limit hold’em, pot-limit Omaha, and 2-7 triple draw lowball.
There were 412 players willing to put up the $2,500 to play in this tournament, which made for a $947,600 prize pool for the final 40 players to split according to their finishes. A t

The day of the seniors-only event at the World Series of Poker is always an interesting one. Instead of spry, young players rushing the hallways and sometimes taking a don’t-care approach to the poker tournaments, the massive crowd of players over-50’s (many of whom were quite a few years past that minimum age limit) treated the day like the opportunity of a lifetime. Most were quiet and respectful of the game and the WSOP, with wives and children and grandchildren all waiting in the wings to see how their loved one would fare. Though the number of canes and wheelchairs were a bit amusing for the media, it was a day treasured by most in attendance. An entirely different scenario popped up for the late-starting tournament, as razz players took to the felt in the Brasilia Room. It says something about Phil Hellmuth’s natural affinity for the World Series that it took just two visits for him to become World Champion, depose the then-king Johnny Chan and shake up the poker world. Twenty years later he is still a major force and undoubtedly the most successful player in the Series’ 40-year history. His World Series record is absolutely peerless: he holds eleven bracelets; the most cashes ever (at 69) and has almost $ 6m in winnings from the Series alone.
Thanks to an epic two-day interview in which we trailed Hellmuth around a PGA golf course, the LA Poker Classic and LA’s most fashionable watering holes, we managed to get unprecedented access to his thoughts and memories from 20 years of the World Series. Here
To the typical player, making it in the money at even a single WSOP event could be the accomplishment of a lifetime. However, to be considered among the ten most successful WSOP players of all time, you would need at least 45 cashes to even make the list. Considering that practically all of the names here are continuing to cash in the WSOP even as the fields for the tournaments get larger and larger, it appears that these ten players will be all but impossible to catch up to on the all-time most WSOP cashes list.
#10 and #9 (Tied) – Brent Carter and John Juanda – 45 cashes
#8 – Chau Giang – 46 cashes
#7 – Humberto Brenes – 52 cashes
#6 – Erik Seidel – 53 cashes
#5 and #4 (Tied) – T.J. Cloutier and Berr
Today was the first day of the much anticipated 40k buy in at the 2009 World Series of Poker. There were many questions as to who would show up and how many players would be able to afford the steep buy in. Even in the time of a recession, there were over 200 players who registered for the event. It was no surprise that this tournament would be attended by high profile players like Phil Hellmuth, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Annie Duke, and Johnny Chan (just to name a few). It was a surprise that there were lesser known players that decided to take their stab at this event as well. Thi

The announcement by ESPN executive Doug White on the annual pre-WSOP conference call that all of the television broadcasts in 2009 will consist of only no-limit hold’em events was a bit surprising to many who look forward to variety in their poker programming each year. But the new taping schedule brings with it new opportunities for a bigger TV audience and chances for poker enthusiasts to catch live streaming video of more final tables online at Bluff and ESPN360.ESPN typically got high ratings for its broadcast of World Series of Poker events like the $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. tournament, but in the hopes of luring more people looking for the basic no-limit hold’em games, the executives at the network decided to simplify the filming schedule at the 2009 WSOP.
