While it’s a busy time for live poker events throughout Australasia, the online poker world continues to kick along with Full Tilt Poker’s FTOPS in full swing, and we’re please to report that the Aussies are making a huge impression on the virtual felt as Australian Michael “m_hawk_1” Hawkins claimed a victory in FTOPS Event #18. The tournament was a $216 buy-in “Cashout” tournament, meaning that players could cash out a portion of their chips in for money during the tournament. Hawkins won the title and the FTOPS Jersey, but had to settle for second place in the amount of money cashed, due to the third place finisher cashing out $44,000 before the beginning of the final table.

Will he do it? Since the poker boom, there has never been so much anticipation regarding one player and one final table. But as Phil Ivey looks to complete an incredible World Series, the poker community will eagerly watch to see if he will add the finishing touches to a magical WSOP run. Although he enters the World Series of Poker main-event final table just seventh in chips, Ivey is the overwhelming favorite in the fans’ minds. A WSOP poll showed that 78 percent of fans expected him to come back and win. Some bookmakers only give two players better odds — chip leader Darvin Moon and Eric Buchman, who is second in chips — despite the fact that six people come into the final table with bigger stacks than him.

If 700 players showed up to play in one of the Deep Stack Extravaganza events this month, could the Venetian accommodate them? “Absolutely,” answered Kathy Raymond, the director of poker operations for the casino. The Venetian’s fourth and final Deep Stack series of the year begins today with a $340 tournament at 12 p.m. As has become tradition with the November series, all of the 24 events will be no-limit hold’em. Day 1A of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Warsaw main event began today in Poland. The first flight for this event attracted 88 players, and by the end of the night, 64 remained. Notable players who were lost along the way during the early going were Angel Guillen and J.C. Alvarado. At the end of seven levels of poker, the 2009 EPT Barcelona winner Carter Phillips (pictured right) was the chip leader with 194,850, and he was followed by Team PokerStars pro Luca Pagano, who held 101,575. PartyPoker.com is hoping that their players will love their brand new poker promotion. The web gaming giant and Ace Magazine have collaborated to create Poker in the Sky, an “elevated” poker tournament taking place on September 11th, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
In the tournament, twenty-two poker players will get on a platform and then be hoisted fifty meters in the air above the City Hall Square. They will then play a 4-hour poker event, surrounded by the spires of the city and with actual birds the only audiences. Two of the twenty-two participants will go to celebrity players, but the rest of the spots are up for grabs on PartyPoker.com-provided that you do not have any fear of heights.
The tournament is limited to residents of Denmark only and the last satellite event happened on September 3rd, 2009.

The French parliament has approved a bill to regulate and legalize online gambling, including online poker. The new law is expected to come into force next year, and up to 100 operators are expected to apply for licenses. In an unexpected twist, an amendment was added to the bill which stipulated that any company wishing to apply for a license must close their current French player accounts for six months before they can be licensed. Another amendment means that only those online gambling operators that do not have subsidiaries or operations in tax havens (such as Gibraltar) can be considered for a license.

The poker pro, who will show up to play as part of the November Nine at the World Series Of Poker final table next month, wrangled with Erik “DIN_FRU” Sagstrom in a heads up confrontation as well as mixing it up in other games.
